How PE Teams Can Find The Insight That Matters

Clarity comes from separating signal from noise.
The right expert matters more than the largest pool.
Conflicting perspectives make validation critical.
AI can improve access, but not judgment.
Targeted insight strengthens investment conviction.
Private equity deal teams have never had greater access to information.
So how can deal teams turn greater access into greater clarity?
More information, more experts and more perspectives don't automatically create greater clarity. In fact, they can create three new challenges.

1. More information doesn't mean more clarity
Deal teams can now access an extraordinary amount of information before making an investment decision. But not every data point is useful for decision-making.
The challenge is separating signal from noise: identifying what is genuinely new, what simply confirms the existing narrative and what could actually change the investment case. AI is increasingly effective at finding and synthesizing information. But synthesis isn't the same as judgment.
The question for deal teams is no longer simply "What can we find?" It's "What actually matters?"
2. More experts don’t mean the right expert
The same is true of expert access.
PE firms can reach more experts than ever, but a larger pool doesn't necessarily make it easier to find the person who can answer a specific diligence question.
A former CRO in healthcare software might look like the perfect match. But what if the question is specifically about why procurement behavior is changing among mid-market hospital groups? The right expert may be someone with a very different title or career history who has lived that specific experience.
"AI makes it easier to identify experts who look right on paper. It doesn't make it easier to know whether they're right for the question. That's still a human judgment." — Ammad Ejaz, Head of Commercial-Consulting & Financial Services EMEA, IDR
The challenge isn't simply access to experts. It's finding the expertise that's relevant to the thesis being tested. That's where custom recruitment matters. Starting with the investment question rather than simply searching an existing database allows firms to find experts with direct experience of the issue they need to understand. Human vetting then helps establish whether that experience is genuinely relevant.
3. More answers can create uncertainty
Finally, more information can mean more conflicting perspectives.
Market data may suggest one thing. Management may say another. An AI-generated analysis can identify a third narrative, while an expert may reveal that what's happening on the ground is different again.
The challenge becomes knowing which perspective to trust and what it means for the investment thesis.
This is where firsthand expertise becomes particularly valuable.
The right expert doesn't simply provide another data point. They can explain why the data looks the way it does, validate what the deal team is seeing or challenge an assumption that has started to look like a fact.
The new diligence advantage
The answer isn't more information. It's more targeted information.
For PE deal teams, that means being deliberate about where expert input can add value:
- Start with the question. Identify the specific gaps, assumptions or uncertainties that could change the investment decision.
- Go beyond the obvious expert. Ask to speak with people with direct experience of the issue — not simply the right title or sector background.
- Choose relevance over volume. Focus on speaking with a few select experts with direct experience, rather than reviewing a long list of mixed relevancy profiles.
- Use experts to resolve uncertainty not just validate a thesis. Seek expert input to challenge assumptions, investigate conflicting signals and strengthen conviction before making a decision.
